MARYLAND LOTTERY Through the Maryland Lottery, lottery tickets are sold and redeemed at licensed retail stores throughout Maryland. These lottery agents are private companies that receive commissions and fees to sell the games to the public. Transactions are processed via terminals connected to a computerized online system in real time. The proceeds of the lottery will be credited to the State Lottery Fund (Articles 9-118 to 9-120 of the State Government Code). Funds from the State Lottery Fund are paid to the Maryland Stadium Facilities Fund, the Maryland Veterans Trust Fund, the Baltimore City Public School Construction Financing Fund and the remaining funds to the State General Fund (Section 9-120 of the Code state government). In fiscal 2017, approximately 61.9% of lottery revenue was spent paying prizes to players; 7.5% were paid to retail commissions; and 3.5% on operating expenses.
